    How does manual degaussing work?

    Manual degaussers use powerful permanent magnets or electromagnetic coils to generate intense magnetic fields (10,000-40,000 gauss) that instantly scramble the magnetic domains on hard drives and tapes, making data completely unrecoverable. The process takes just seconds per drive.

    Is degaussing better than physical destruction?

    For magnetic media, degaussing is 20x faster, silent, and more cost-effective than physical destruction. It meets the same NSA/DOD standards but doesn't create waste or require drive replacement. However, degaussing doesn't work on SSDs - those require physical destruction or specialized erasure.

    What gauss rating do I need?

    For modern high-capacity drives (1TB+), you need minimum 10,000 gauss. For maximum security and to handle all current drives including perpendicular recording technology, we recommend 15,000-20,000 gauss. All our NSA-listed models exceed these requirements.

    Can degaussed drives be reused?

    No, degaussed hard drives cannot be reused for data storage as the servo tracks and magnetic structure are permanently destroyed. However, they can be safely recycled for precious metal recovery, making degaussing more environmentally friendly than physical destruction..

    Do manual degaussers require power?

    Many manual degaussers use permanent rare earth magnets and require no power at all, making them completely portable for on-site data destruction. Electric models offer higher gauss ratings and faster processing for high-volume operations.
